Paolo Petrocelli, FRSA (born 15 October 1984) is an Italian cultural manager and academic.[1] He is the head of Dubai Opera.[2]

Early life and education

Petrocelli was born in Rome, the Capital city of Italy. He studied violin at the Conservatorio di Musica Santa Cecilia in Rome and earned a B.A. in Literature and Musicology from the Sapienza University of Rome.[3] He got his B.A. Hons in Music at the Middlesex University,[4] an Executive MBA from the SDA Bocconi School of Management,[5][6] a PhD in cultural economics at the IULM University of Milan.[7] He also got an MA in violin performance at the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia[8][9] in Rome. His research interests extend from musicology, in particular British music of 20th-century, to cultural and performing arts management. Petrocelli is the author of essays and books on composers such as William Walton,[10] Edward Elgar,[11] Benjamin Britten[12] and on topics such as the development of opera in the Middle East and North Africa.[13][14]

He has been a visiting fellow at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library[15] of the Yale University and a visiting researcher at the MIT Media Lab.

Cultural Management and Leadership

As a cultural manager,[16][17] Paolo Petrocelli developed his professional expertise in the area of performing arts management, music management and arts administration.[18] [19] Petrocelli launched and developed a series of international initiatives, including the creation of new nonprofit organizations.

EMMA for Peace

In 2013, he founded EMMA for Peace, or the Euro Mediterranean Music Academy,[20] an international nonprofit organization for the promotion of peace through music diplomacy and education in Europe, Middle East and the Mediterranean region.[21][22] Italian conductor Riccardo Muti serves as Honorary President of the organization.[23] Petrocelli launched the organization on occasion of the 13th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates[24] in Warsaw, Poland, with a series of inaugural concerts and workshops.

Coldplay

In 2019, Petrocelli was appointed as cultural advisor of Coldplay,[25][26] to support the making of special projects for the release of their eighth studio album Everyday Life (Coldplay album).[27]

Dubai Opera

Petrocelli’s international prominence grew with his appointment as the Head of Dubai Opera, a role where he continues to build bridges between the Middle East and the global arts community. Under his leadership, Dubai Opera has positioned itself as a central hub for cultural exchange in the region, showcasing world-class performances while promoting regional talent on the global stage. In 2023, Emaar Properties appointed Paolo Petrocelli as the new Head ofDubai Opera, the main performing arts center in the United Arab Emirates. [28] [29] Under his leadership, Dubai Opera is developing a new strategy of development for the arts and culture in the UAE. [30]

Advocacy and Academic Work

Beyond his executive roles, Petrocelli is a passionate advocate for music education and the intersection of arts with social and cultural policy. He is a frequent speaker at international conferences and academic forums on topics such as cultural diplomacy, arts management, and music education.

Currently he is a researcher affiliate at the metaLAB at Harvard University, where he coordinates along with Jeffrey Schnapp[31] a global research project titled Future Stage,[32] dedicated to investigate the future of the performing arts.[33][34][35]

Petrocelli is also known for his teaching and research in cultural management, contributing to academic programs and offering expertise to future generations of cultural leaders.

Awards and Recognition

Throughout his career, Paolo Petrocelli has received numerous awards and recognitions for his contributions to the arts, including honors from both Italian and international organizations.For his contributions to the development of the arts and culture, Paolo Petrocelli has been nominated a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum,[36] named by Fast Company as one of the most creative people in business in the Middle East,[37] included by Arabian Business as one of the top 30 leaders under 40 in the Middle East,[38] selected by the think tank Friends of Europe among the 40 most influential young personalities in Europe and nominated European Young Leader.[39]
