Gondangdia Market

edit

Gondangdia Market, formerly known as Boplo Market, is a historic traditional market located in Central Jakarta. This market has been an integral part of the Betawi people's lives for centuries, and holds many stories and memories. Boplo comes from the Dutch word, Bouwploeg, which means a place where plow tools and agricultural management are sold.

Long History

edit

The name Boplo was named after the natives who lived in the area of the De Bouwploeg building and until now it has been called Pasar Gondangdia. Pasar Gondangdia was established in the 18th century during the Dutch colonial era. Initially, this market was a gathering place for traders and buyers of various ethnicities, including Betawi and Dutch. The name “Gondangdia” itself comes from the words “gong” and “dia”, which refer to the traditional Betawi musical instrument, the gong. In the past, this area was famous for its many gong craftsmen, hence the name.

Pasar Gondangdia not only functions as a trading center, but also as a place of social and cultural interaction for the Betawi people. In this market, people exchange information, goods and strengthen social relationships. During its heyday, the 1970s to 1980s, Pasar Gondangdia was always crowded with shoppers from all walks of life.

Development and Transformation

edit

Along with the times, Gondangdia Market underwent various changes and transformations. In the 1980s, the market was officially renamed 'Gondangdia Market, following the management and reorganization of the area. This transformation was done to improve the market's infrastructure and facilities to make it more organized and modern.

Despite its name change, Gondangdia Market is still known for its unique history and culture. One proof of this is the existence of legendary culinary delights such as Gado-Gado Boplo and Roti Lauw that still exist today.

Renovation and Modernization

edit

In 2012, Gondangdia Market underwent a major renovation to improve the quality of infrastructure, cleanliness, and comfort of the market environment after a fire. The market was renovated into a semi-modern market with a more sturdy and well-organized building. In addition, the rearrangement of traders' stalls was also carried out to create a neater and more organized environment.

Pasar Gondangdia: Renovation and Inauguration
