Pasar Gondangdia
editPasar Gondangdia, formerly known as Pasar Boplo, is a historic traditional market located in Central Jakarta. This market has been an integral part of the Betawi people's lives for centuries, and holds many stories and memories. Boplo comes from the Dutch word, Bouwploeg, which means a place where plow tools and agricultural management are sold.
Long History
editThe name Boplo was named after the natives who lived in the area of the De Bouwploeg building and until now it has been called Pasar Gondangdia. Pasar Gondangdia was established in the 18th century during the Dutch colonial era. Initially, this market was a gathering place for traders and buyers of various ethnicities, including Betawi and Dutch. The name “Gondangdia” itself comes from the words “gong” and “dia”, which refer to the traditional Betawi musical instrument, the gong. In the past, this area was famous for its many gong craftsmen, hence the name.
Pasar Gondangdia not only functions as a trading center, but also as a place of social and cultural interaction for the Betawi people. In this market, people exchange information, goods and strengthen social relationships. During its heyday, the 1970s to 1980s, Pasar Gondangdia was always crowded with shoppers from all walks of life.
Development and Transformation
editAlong with the times, Pasar Gondangdia underwent various changes and transformations. In the 1980s, the market was officially renamed Pasar Gondangdia, following the management and reorganization of the area. This transformation was done to improve the market's infrastructure and facilities to make it more organized and modern.
Despite its name change, Pasar Jaya Gondangdia is still known for its unique history and culture. One proof of this is the existence of legendary culinary delights such as Gado-Gado Boplo and Roti Lauw that still exist today.
Renovation and Modernization
editIn 2012, Pasar Gondangdia underwent a major renovation to improve the quality of infrastructure, cleanliness, and comfort of the market environment after a fire. The market was renovated into a semi-modern market with a more sturdy and well-organized building. In addition, the rearrangement of traders' stalls was also carried out to create a neater and more organized environment.
Pasar Gondangdia: Renovation and Inauguration
editInauguration of Pasar Gondangdia
editPasar Gondangdia officially reopened on May 28, 2014. The inauguration ceremony was led by the then Governor of DKI Jakarta, Joko Widodo. This moment marked the resumption of activities in the traditional market that had undergone a process of renovation and modernization.
Pasar Gondangdia, which was previously a traditional market with old and poorly maintained buildings, was renovated in 2012 by the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta. This renovation project aims to:
- Improve the quality of market infrastructure
- Improve the cleanliness and comfort of the market environment
- Make the market an economic and cultural center for the local community.
During the renovation process, the market was rebuilt with a building that has a more modern design. The rearrangement of traders' stalls was done to create a neater and more organized environment. In addition, supporting facilities such as toilets, prayer rooms, and parking lots were also built to improve the comfort of visitors and traders.
The inauguration by Joko Widodo in 2014 marked the completion of this renovation project and the resumption of operations of Pasar Gondangdia as a cleaner, modern, and more convenient market for all visitors and traders.
Pasar Gondangdia: A Valuable Cultural Heritage
editPasar Gondangdia is one of the valuable cultural assets of Jakarta. This market has been a silent witness to the long history and development of Betawi culture. Its existence as an active traditional market reflects the spirit and cultural values held dear by the Betawi people.
Efforts to preserve and revitalize Pasar Gondangdia are expected to continue so that this market can continue to be a valuable cultural heritage for future generations. Pasar Gondangdia is not only a place to shop, but also a place to learn, preserve and celebrate the unique and special Betawi culture.
