Patricia Cain is a law professor. She began her career in 1974 as the first female appointed to the tenure track at the University of Texas. She is acknowledged as the first "out" lesbian law professor in the country.[1]

In 1991 she moved to the University of Iowa where she became the Aliber Family Chair in Law in the law school.[2] In 2003 she became the interim Provost of the University. In 2007 she moved to the University of Santa Clara, where she became the Inez Mabie Distinguished Professor.[3]

Professor Cain's scholarship has been focused on same-sex couples and the tax law. In 2024 she was awarded the Association of American Law Schools inaugural lifetime achievement award by the Tax Section.[4]
