From May 27–28, 2001, a massive, powerful and long-lived wind storm, known as a derecho, moved across the southern Great Plains of the United States, inflicting widespread damage and severe wind gusts in excess of 58 mph (93 km/h) across portions of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
