PlayOJO is an online casino platform that was launched in 2017. It is headquartered in London, and operates in the UK,[1] Sweden, Denmark and Canada. It also operates in Spain and several South American countries under the PlayUZU brand.

PlayOJO is  operated by SkillOnNet Ltd, a software company based in Malta that operates over 50 online casino brands[2] including Genting Casino, BacanaPlay and DrueckGlueck. Skill On Net holds remote gaming licenses in a number of gaming jurisdictions, including the UK,[3] Malta Gaming Authority,[4] Ontario, Germany[5] and Portugal.

In August 2020, PlayOJO added online bingo[6] from technology provider Pragmatic Play.[7]

In the media

edit

In 2021, PlayOJO became the official sponsor of The Masked Singer. The sponsorship arrangement lasted for Seasons 1 and 2 of the show, which drew criticism for its links to online gambling.[8]

In October 2023, Channel 5 aired the PlayOJO Live Casino Show, a late-night programme featuring online 'live dealer' roulette tables.[9]

Recognition

edit

PlayOJO has received several industry awards, including Rising Star in Casino at the SBC Awards 2019,[10] and Mobile Casino Product at the EGR Operator Awards 2023.[11]

Responsible gambling

edit

In 2021 PlayOJO launched a responsible gambling tool called SafeMate,[12] developed by Neccton, a responsible gaming and fraud detection app provider now owned by OpenBet.

In November 2020, PlayOJO released a fake perfume advert titled "Compulsion" featuring TV personality Gemma Collins and created by marketing agency Frank, to raise awareness of problem gambling.[13]

In November 22, PlayOJO released another spoof campaign, "Safe Bets", involving British TV personality Olivia Bowen, to highlight safer gambling.[14]

Regulatory history

edit

The PlayOJO trading name and domain name were added to the Skill On Net remote casino operating licence in 2017, with its bingo product launched under a remote bingo operating licence in February 2020.

Subsequent gaming licences under which PlayOJO now operates were obtained by Skill On Net for Ontario in April 2022, Buenos Aires City in April 2023  and Peru in August 2024.[15]

In 2019, the UK Advertising Standards Authority found that PlayOJO and four other online gambling companies had broken the UK advertising code, in relation to gambling adverts being served to under 18s due to errors made by third party advertisers.[16]

In 2022, it was reported[17] that ASA was to uphold two complaints relating to televised adverts promoting PlayOJO's Hot or Cold feature that "misleadingly implied [the feature] could predict or influence future success".[18]

In 2023, the UK Gambling Commission found that Skill On Net had breached several licence conditions relating to safer gambling and anti-money laundering, resulting in a "payment in lieu of a financial penalty of £305,150".[19]
