Alexander Erik Hubertus Bertil, born 19 april 2016 in Danderyd, is a swedish prince and Duke of Södermanland. He is the first born son of Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland and Princess Sofia, Duchess of Värmland as well as grandson of king Carl XVI Gustaf andqueen Silvia. Prince Alexander is in accordance with the Act of Succession fifth in line for the throne, after his father and before his younger brother prince Gabriel.

Birth

On 19 april 2016 Prince Alexander was born on Danderyds Hospital. At birth he weighed 3 595 grams and was 49 centimeters tall.[1] The following day 21 gun salutes were fired from Skeppsholmen and salute stations in Boden, Härnösand, Karlskrona and Gothenburg[2] On April 21 a Council of State was held at Stockholm Palace where king Carl XVI Gustaf announced the new borns name and title.[3]

On Friday 22 April a Te Deum church service was held in the Royal Chapel of Stockholm Palace to mark the birth. At the service were members of he royal family and the Riksdag and Government.

Baptism

Prince Alexander was baptised on 9 September 2016 in the Drottningholm Palace Chapel. He was bapstied by archbishop Antje Jackelén, Court Preacher bishop Johan Dalman and Royal Court Congregation pastor Michael Bjerkhagen. The princes godparents were his aunt Crown Princess Victoria, Carl Philips cousin Victor Magnuson, Lina Frejd, Sofias sister, Carl Philips friend Jan-Åke Hansson and Sofias friend Cajsa Larsson.[4]

Change in Royal Status

On 7 oktober 2019 king Carl XVI Gustaf rescinded royal status from the children of prince Carl Philip and princess Madeleines and stripped them of their styles as royal highnesses. They however remained princes/princesses and dukes/duchesses and members of royal family, altough not the royal house. As a consequense of this prince Alexander is no longer expected to carry out royal duties. Alexander remains in line for the throne.[5]
