Robert Selden Rose (1888-28 February 1964) was an American hispanist and Yale Professor.

Biography

edit

Selden Rose attended the Groton School, earned a master's degree at Yale and graduated from the University of Berkeley (1915). He furthered his studies in Europe before World War I and taught at Saint Paul's School in Concord and at the University of California before joining Yale University's Romance languages department in 1919. During the war he served in the Army Signal Corps. He married Annette Moran Rose, by whom he had a son, Robert junior, and four daughters.[1] A lover of the sport of baseball, in which he excelled as a pitcher, he was appointed chairman of the Yale Athletic Association's board of control in 1930, where he served for two years. Having discovered and edited Francisco de Quevedo's Spain Defended (1916), he was primarily a Quevedoist, but also edited editions of Cristóbal Suárez de Figueroa, an epistolary of Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, and the famous drama Don Francisco de Quevedo by the Romantic poet Eulogio Florentino Sanz. He also translated into English verse, together with Leonard Bacon, the Cantar de mio Cid, a version that is still reprinted today. He also edited one of the diaries of the Portolá Expedition (1769-1770), the first to explore Alta California by land. He died on 28 February 1964 in Wilmot Flat.
