The Visual Arts Encounters of Yaounde (RAVY) is an international visual arts festival held biennially in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon. Established in 2008 by Serge Olivier Fokoua and Mbassi Landry, this event emerged from a collaboration between the French artist Jean Voguet and Olivier Fokoua at the Crane Lab. RAVY aims to celebrate a diverse array of artistic expressions through various spaces and aesthetic approaches, with the ambition of making art more accessible to a broader audience..[1]
History and editions
editThe inaugural edition took place in April 2008. Since then, the festival has welcomed artists from around the globe while also showcasing local talent. The fifth edition, held in 2016, transpired from July 15 to July 31 and was themed 'Contemporalities.'[2]
The sixth edition in 2018 highlighted urban challenges and celebrated the evolution of African cities under the theme 'Urbanitudes' This event featured artists such as Fred Ebami and Nathalie Anguezomo Mba Bikoro, who contributed to this reflection.[3]
The festival presents, over a week, a series of artistic interventions in various public spaces, galleries, and cultural venues throughout Yaoundé. The program includes exhibitions, workshops, performances, and installations. Renowned international artists join the RAVY alongside Cameroonian talents such as Salifou Lindou, Joseph Francis Sumegne, Boris Nzebo, Jean David Nkot, and Ginette Daleu, as well as performers Christian Etongo and Zora Snake
Objectives and Impact
editThe RAVY festival seeks to enhance the visibility of contemporary art by bringing it to outdoor spaces where the public can easily engage with it. This event celebrates local artistic talent and encourages collaboration between Cameroonian artists and their international counterparts. By doing so, the RAVY breathes new life into Yaoundé's artistic landscape, while also promoting the diverse richness of Cameroonian contemporary art on a global scale.[3]
