Raymond Blind is an Ingram Associate Professor of Cancer Research at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center,[1] an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism,[2] and has secondary appointments in biochemistry and pharmacology at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.[1] Blind is also the Director of Vanderbilt's Quantitative & Chemical Biology program.[3] He is an active member of the Vanderbilt Institute of Chemical Biology,[4] Vanderbilt Center for Structural Biology,[5] and Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.[1][3][6]
Early life and education
[edit]Blind was born in Buffalo, NY. He received his B.S in Molecular Genetics at Fredonia State College.[7] Blind graduated with his Ph.D. in pharmacology at New York University. He did postdoctoral research in pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of California San Francisco in 2006.[7] [8]
Research
[edit]Blind's research explores second messenger signaling in the nucleus.[8] The nucleus of every eukaryotic cell contains a pool of phosphoinositide lipids that do not exist in a bilayer structure, but are complexed to proteins.[9] His lab uses structural biology, functional genomics and chemical biology to study how nuclear signaling events regulate gene expression,[7] specifically, the signaling properties of nuclear inositide lipids and inositol phosphates.[8]
Blind's research has discovered how liver and endometrial cancers in African Americas and Hispanics continue to grow. A protein controls organ growth by placing a "molecular barcode" on the DNA.[10] By testing the barcodes, this allows Blind's lab to develop new therapies for liver cancer patients.[10]
