Ready Player Two is an upcoming American science fiction action-adventure film based on Ernest Cline's 2020 novel of the same name. It serves as the sequel to the 2018 film Ready Player One.
Production
editRight after the release of Ready Player One, Ernest Cline said he was working on a sequel.[1][2] For a sequel to the film, Cline stated, "I think there's a good chance that, if this one does well, Warner Bros. will want to make a sequel. I don't know if Steven [Spielberg] would want to dive back in, because he would know what he is getting into. He's said that it's the third-hardest film he's made, out of dozens and dozens of movies".[3][4] Zak Penn, who wrote the film adaptation of the novel alongside Cline, spend time with Cline discussing the possibilities of a film adaptation for the sequel novel, expressing interest in returning to write such film.[5] Co-star Olivia Cooke, and presumably the rest of the cast, is "contracted to sequels".[6] In December 2020, during an interview with Inverse, Cline stated that a film adaptation of the sequel novel is in early stages given Hollywood's frozen state due to the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.[7]
In March 2024, Spielberg confirmed that he would not be directing the film, but would only serve as a producer.[8]
