Rebecca Suzanne Kanter (born 1977 or 1978)[3] is an American lawyer who has served as a judge of the San Diego County Superior Court since 2023. She is a nominee to serve as a United States district judge the United States District Court for the Southern District of California.[4]

Education

Kanter received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Irvine in 2000 and her Juris Doctor from the UCLA School of Law in 2003.

Career

From 2003 to 2004, she served as a law clerk for Judge Harry Lindley Hupp of the United States District Court for the Central District of California. From 2004 to 2006, Kanter was an associate in the Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles offices of O'Melveny & Myers. From 2006 to 2022, Kanter was an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California, where she served as Deputy Chief in the Major Crimes Section from 2018 to 2019. Since 2023, Kanter has served as a judge on the San Diego County Superior Court. Kanter is on the board of the Lawyers Club of San Diego.[5] She has also been an adjunct professor at University of San Diego School of Law.[6]

Nomination to district court

On January 10, 2024, President Joe Biden announced his intent to nominate Kanter to serve as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. On February 1, 2024, President Biden nominated Kanter to a seat vacated by Judge William Q. Hayes, who assumed senior status on August 1, 2021.[7] Her nomination is pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee.[8]
