REED is a privately owned company who specializes in industrial solutions across the abrasive, roofing, and filtration industries. The company engineers and manufactures products such as Black Beauty Abrasives, SureCut Edge, and Bluescope Filtration solutions.
Founded by H.B. Reed in 1930, the company specializes in transforming industrial co-products into practical materials, pioneering sustainability efforts.
The same decade, the company launched the Black Beauty Brand, a staple in the blasting abrasive industry. Those familiar with the abrasive industry deemed Black Beauty Brand the “Coca-Cola of Coal Slag.”
In the 1950s, the company expanded its expertise into the roofing industry, introducing roofing granules, with headlap, mineral surfacing, and back-surfacing products, powered by coal, copper, and calcium iron silicate (CIS) slags.
In 1983, the Pennsylvania-based Harsco Corporation (now Enviri) acquired Reed Minerals, in the effort to bolster the company’s strategic and product capabilities. Reed Minerals rebranded under the Harsco name in 2010.
Reed Minerals continued to develop new products, introducing Black Beauty Iron, Glass, and Brightline Filter Media.
At the turn of the 2020s, engineers and scientists within the quality team developed Sure/Cut Velocity, later renamed Black Beauty Velocity, to adapt to market conditions.
In August 2024, the PE firm Speyside Equity carved out Reed Minerals from Enviri for $45 million in cash, transitioning to the next era of industrial solutions. The company rebranded to REED in 2025.
Two years later, on August 4th, 2026, Reed Minerals acquired competitor U.S. Minerals to strengthen logistical and production capabilities. The company continues to grow and evolve, ushering into the next era of industrial solutions with a mix of grace and grit.
