The "Republic Of Newfoundland" was actually the Dominion of Newfoundland which was a Dominion of the British Empire, which owned the lands of modern day Newfoundland And Labrador, which is now a Canadian province, It joined Canada in a vote of which it pretty much had 3 options, Britain, Independence Or Canada. The idea of joining Canada was brought to being by "Joseph R. Smallwood
". Many Newfoundlander's dislike the idea of being a part of Canada some even state that the vote was rigged. Though to be quite fair, if Newfoundland did gain independence they would be quite poor or in lack of resources, and the cod fishery collapse in Newfoundland could have been even worse
