Ria Bahadur[1] (born 2005) is an American activist, youth legislator, and human rights advocate. She is known for her role in authoring and championing Senate Bill 5355[2] (SB 5355) in Washington State, which mandates sex trafficking prevention education for public school students in grades 7 through 12.
Early life and Education
editRia Bahadur was born in Portland, Oregon, USA, and raised in Washington State. From a young age, Bahadur developed a strong interest in social justice, inspired by books such as Girl Rising by Tanya Lee Stone. Her early advocacy efforts began at Eastside Preparatory School, where she initiated a seminar titled "Sexual Violence and Sex Trafficking in the 21st Century."
Bahadur's academic focus expanded as she entered Stanford University, where she continues to explore the intersections of science, policy, and ethics.
Career
editAdvocacy for Senate Bill 5355
editDuring 2022-2023, during her junior and senior years of high school, Bahadur drafted and advocated for SB 5355, a bill designed to address the growing problem of sex trafficking among minors in Washington State. The legislation mandates comprehensive sex trafficking prevention education in schools, covering topics such as:
- Recognizing race, gender, and socioeconomic factors in trafficking dynamics.
- Providing accurate definitions and reducing stigmatization of sex trafficking.
- Reporting systems and identification strategies to protect at-risk students.
The bill received unanimous support in the Washington State Senate and was signed into law by Governor Jay Inslee on May 4, 2023. Bahadur collaborated with Senator Claire Wilson and the Legislative Youth Advisory Council during the bill's development, testifying[3] before the Senate Early Learning and K-12 Education Committee[4] to emphasize the need for proactive education on the issue.

editRia Bahadur grew up as a performing artist in Indian classical singing and dance, and has a passion for Art History and travel. She also spent her early years as a swimmer and maintains a love for ocean sports like surfing and paddle-boarding. An avid animal lover, Bahadur is especially fond of dogs.
