Rista Cvetković (1880-1906) was a Serbian freedom-fighter in the Macedonian Struggle. He was among the early victims of the long and protracted war that began in 1903 and continued well after his death.
Biography
editRista Cvetković was born in 1880 in the region of Poreče in Vardar Serbia (now North Macedonia) at a time when the non-canonical Bulgarian Exarchate used all kinds of means to persuade Serbian villagers to convert to their schismatic persuasion with VMRO as their coercive and belligerent arm. It didn't take long for young Rista Cvetković to join the Serbian Chetnik Organization and don a uniform and a rifle to protect his people from the aggressive Bulgarian propaganda. He fought in all the early battles.
At the second Battle of Čelopek which took place on 25 January 1906, he was killed.
Legacy
editHe is remembered as a Serbian Macedonian hero who sacrificed his life to free his people from bondage. A photo of him in uniform with a rifle appeared in the Vardar calendar for 1907 is now kept in the Home Department of the Belgrade City Library. He is not to be confused with other Chetniks by the same name who died prior (Rista Cvetković-Božinče, 1878) or after (Rista Cvetković-Sušički, 1907).
