Romer Gutierrez Jazo (born April 19, 1991) is the owner and manager of two New York-based recruitment agencies, RCC Staffing Solutions USA and JazCorp Manpower Group Ltd. A Filipino by birth and a permanent resident in the United States, he is also a philanthropist who has provided funding for scholarships for the underprivileged youth in the Philippine province of Bicol where he grew up. Early life and family Romer and his two sisters were born and raised in Sorsogon City. His father, Romulo V. Jazo Jr., managed the family-owned 14 hectares that produced rice and copra. He was also active in the town politics. Romer’s mother, Myrna B. Jazo, was a teacher in the local elementary school. Education Romer finished his elementary-school-level graduation at Butag Elementary School; he was always first honor from kindergarten, and graduated valedictorian in elementary school. He finished high school at St. Bonaventure Academy also as a valedictorian. Aside from being a consistent honor student, he won the popular local and regional Quiz Bee contests, specifically Science and Social Studies, in Bicol. For his college education, he took up Marine Transportation at the Mariners Polytechnic Colleges Foundation, which was based in Legazpi City, the capital of the Bicol region. Career Seafaring. After his graduation, Romer took his apprenticeship at the German ship, the Aida Vita. His transfer to Celebrity Cruises saw his rise quickly saw him rise to AB or Quartermaster after a year. As he recalled, he was the “youngest … in that position during that time.”<2> Restaurant work in the U.S. After seven years on the sea, he took his colleagues’ advice and entered a new career in the bar and restaurant industry in New York in 2019. He started as a bartender in Manhattan’s Thai Restobar. He later tended the bar and waited on tables in three different restaurants in the Big Apple. Immigration law. When the COVID-19 pandemic caused the closure of many restaurants all over the world in 2020, Romer took a job as a receptionist in an immigration law firm owned and managed by a Filipino-American lawyer. Under the guidance of the law firm, he finished a two-year training program to increase his knowledge and skills. He eventually became one of the employment department’s heads, recruiting and training other employees and staff. He later took on the work as a paralegal. Romer was promoted again as the law firm’s employment manager who conducted H-1B cases for school systems looking to hire professional teachers from other parts of the world. He recruited and chose the qualified ones, especially from the Philippines, and made sure their visas and other papers were in working order. As defined by the U.S. Department of Labor, the H-1B visa is favorable for “ … employers seeking to hire nonimmigrant aliens as workers in specialty occupations or as fashion models of distinguished merit and ability. “<3> His own recruitment agency. After three years, Romer put up his staffing and manpower recruitment agencies in New York. His focus remains “on helping teachers from Asia to have jobs in the U.S.”<4> Romer is currently pursuing a U.S. citizenship.
