Biography and career

Early years

edit

Ronald Mugula was born in Kampala, Uganda. Coming from a humble background, he was only 15 years old when he started out trying to find ways to develop himself. He tried his hand at business, selling coffee in the small town of wobulenzi. He became successful and had the possibility to work with many different people as he had already shown his ability to be a businessman. He moved to the capital, Kampala, trying to look for better life as he said in a 2011 interview. He was inspired to start kickboxing after watching action movies of Jet Lee , Van Damme, Bruce Lee and others. At the age of 16, he started training, first by himself. After fighting as an amateur on the kickboxing circuit,he was in gym at Kampala Boxing Club (KBC). There he was introduced to Ugandan kickboxing organizer, Eddy Gombya, who had brought the Uganda national team for trials , preparing to go to Kenya for the International Championship. Ronald Mugula was asked if he was interested in joining them . He did and fought 3 fighters 2 rounds each and became the National Champion. He switched to the national team from that time on. He later travelled with the team to Nairobi, Kenya for that event and he became the East African gold medalist on 15th November 1997. He would later join Natete Pentagon Kickboxing Academy, instructed by Iga Sadat who became his first kickboxing trainer.

Having become the East African Champion, he had the chance of travelling everywhere to fight, representing his country Uganda. Also he fought in local events from 1999 - 2007, in many countries like Georgia, Sweden, Italy, Portugal, Bulgaria, Greece, Ethiopia, Germany, Austria, Mexico, Rwanda and others. In 2007 Ronald Mugula was invited to Bulgaria to represent Uganda in the World Muay Thai Championship. After the fight where he won a silver medal, he decided to stay in Bulgaria. After having a big struggle finding out how to live in Europe he met many people from different countries "and all of them supported me. Especially two Nigerian men Dariyo and Mosco helped me a lot and many other Africans living there. So after having good connections I decided to turn professional and moved to Germany". In Germany the first school he joined was Sportschule Neumann, in Offenbach, owned by the late Steve Neumann. Thereafter he joined Nubia Sports in Mainz Kastel led by Thilo Schneider, who was responsible for more success and skills. After loosing the first professional fight in Hamburg, in 2008, his career developed slowly. A year later, again in Germany, Ronald Mugula challenged Viktor Sarezki in one of the Mixed Fight Gala in Darmstadt for a non title fight. The fight went the distance of 3 grueling rounds. Mugula lost but it was a close decision. Shortly after he fought many strong fighters in the EU including one Rashid Belain from Holland. He later fought a rematch against Viktor Sarezki, on the Mixed Fight Night in Darmstadt, against Marco Groh and a year later against Dada Morina, inluding at the Nubia Fight Night 2013 against Marko Henschke.

At the beginning of Mugula's career, kickboxing in Uganda was not popular and hardly had a following until Golola Moses, a very popular kickboxer in Uganda, became its poster boy. Thanks to him it developed into one of the most popular sports disciplines in the country. After Golola lost his fight against Hungarian fighter Andras Nagy in Uganda, Mugula had the chance to fight that same opponent and he went on to win by TKO in the 3rd round to become the World Intercontinental champion. Page text.[1] He became an instant super star in his home country and since that point it impossible for him to walk on the street without fans coming to him. After getting more local sponsorship deals, Mugula could finance his living. The World Title Fight in January 2014 was sponsored by Abitex Promotion but went wrong under political judgment and the last Drama fight was promoted by KT promotion where he lost by 49-47 50-48 49-49.[2]
