History

edit

Ruger announced the SFAR in an article from September 6th, 2022.[1] Ruger claimed that the SFAR would be stronger than the average comparable .308 MSR, while remaining lighter and more compact. Ben Parker, the Lead Design Engineer, claimed that the rifle would deliver a "...rugged, reliable, and safe rifle...".

Design

edit

The rifle takes elements from other similar gas-piston DPMS-style AR-10 rifles. It features an M-LOK rail on both the sides and the bottom of the rifle's handguard. The rifles also feature a full top piccaninny rail on 6.5 Creedmoor caliber models, while models in 7.62x51 NATO/.308 Winchester have a half rail.[2][3] Notable features of the rifle (As expressed by Ruger) are the 15" M-LOK aluminium handguard, a Ruger Elite 452 trigger group, a 4140 cold-forged chrome-moly steel barrel, and an aluminium-forged 7075-T6 hard-coat upper/lower receiver set.[4]

Models

edit

The Ruger SFAR comes in two models, both having slight differences:

  • 7.62 NATO/.308 Win: 16.10 in barrel, 6.8 lbs unloaded weight, 25.60 - 37.25 inch overall length
  • 6.5 Creedmoor: 20 in barrel, 7.3 lbs unloaded weight, 39.50 - 41.25 inch overall length

The Ruger SFAR also has various variants to fit the state firearm standards for states such as California.

Reception

edit

The Ruger SFAR has been received well by the firearm community, especially hunters. It is notable for it's recoil reduction in .308, as well as it's light weight.[5][6] The Ruger SFAR was announced as the 2023 winner of the Industry Choice Awards for Rifle of the Year.[7]
