Sacred Heart Statue | |
---|---|
Artist | Jan Custers |
Year | 1922 |
Location | Heerbaan / St. Antoniusplein, Millingen aan de Rijn |
The Sacred Heart Statue is a statue located in the Dutch town of Millingen aan de Rijn, in the province of Gelderland.
Background
editLambertus van Boxmeer (1874–1933), pastor of the St. Anthony of Padua Church, initiated the placement of a Sacred Heart statue in Millingen. The statue was created in the Stratum workshop of sculptor Jan Custers. The Sacred Heart statue was unveiled and consecrated on Ascension Day, May 25, 1922.[1] The statue stood on a carved pedestal at the intersection of Heerbaan and Eijckelhofstraat until 1959.[2] It was then moved to the lawn in front of the rectory on Heerbaan, where it received a new pedestal.
The church was registered as a Rijksmonument in 2000, partly due to the ensemble value "in relation to the surrounding buildings of the Catholic parish complex (rectory, sexton's house, church toilets, Sacred Heart statue, cemetery)". The Sacred Heart statue was restored in 2007.[3]
Description
editThe stone statue depicts Christ standing on a half (world) globe, with both hands raised. He is dressed in a draped robe and a cloak. On his chest is the Sacred Heart surrounded by a crown of thorns. The base of the statue bears Custers' signature at the back and the inscription
“ | COME TO ME ALL OF YOU | ” |
on the front.
The statue stands on a tapering stone pedestal.
