Samsung Solve for Tomorrow is an annual innovation competition organized by Samsung India, in collaboration with the Indian Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology’s (MeitY) Startup Hub and the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) of IIT Delhi.[1]

The competition aims to promote innovation among young people to address pressing societal challenges in Education, Healthcare, Environment, and Agriculture. It offers substantial grants, including a total prize fund of INR 15 million (approximately $180,000), to the top teams for the development of their innovative solutions. Participants aged 16–22 are annually evaluated to submit projects addressing significant issues within these fields.[2]

History

edit

Samsung launched the Solve for Tomorrow competition in the United States in 2010, with the objective of empowering young individuals to create positive social impact. Since its inception, the competition has grown to encompass 33 countries.[3] In 2022, Samsung introduced Solve for Tomorrow in India, marking its debut in the country and further extending the program's global reach.[3]

Structure

The Solve for Tomorrow competition is organized in multiple stages to support and mentor participants:

  1. Application Phase: Individuals or teams aged 16–22 are invited to submit project ideas addressing challenges in Education, Environment, Agriculture, and Healthcare. The application period runs from April to May each year.
  2. Selection of Top 30 Teams: A jury, consisting of experts from IIT Delhi's Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) and the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) Startup Hub, evaluates submissions. The top 30 teams are selected based on criteria including innovation, feasibility, and social impact.
  3. Bootcamp and Prototype Development: The selected top 30 teams participate in a five-day residential bootcamp at IIT Delhi. They receive training in Design Thinking, innovation, and intellectual property rights. Each team is allocated INR 20,000 to develop initial prototypes.
  4. Selection of Top 10 Teams: Teams present their prototypes to a jury of experts who select the top 10 teams. These teams receive INR 100,000 each to further develop their prototypes and receive additional mentorship from Samsung employees and IIT Delhi experts.
  5. Final Pitch and Awards: At the Finale Event, the top 10 teams present their final prototypes. The top three teams are awarded a total prize fund of INR 15 million (approximately $180,000) and receive Samsung products, along with six months of mentorship from IIT Delhi.[2]

Partnerships

edit

Samsung collaborates with the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology's (MeitY) Startup Hub. This partnership provides participants with academic and industry resources to support their project development.[4]

Mentors from MeitY and IIT Delhi, who are subject experts, also serve on the competition's judging panel. They contribute to the evaluation process, mentor participants and offer guidance to ensure the projects meet established criteria for innovation and technological feasibility.[2]
