The Savannah Bar Association was established in 1917 as a non-profit organization designed to organize and provide legal services in Savannah, Georgia.[1][2][3] It's membership consists of over 500 licensed attorneys, of which it maintains a directory. [4]
Community Engagement
editThe association helps provide networking for local attorneys and maintains a directory of its members for Savannah residents. Additionally, the association holds an annual boat ride, monthly lunches, receptions, and Law Day.[1] The association also maintains a Young Lawyers Division to foster new legal talent in the Savannah Area. [5][6]
Structure
editThe association is governed by 4 volunteer, elected officers. These officers are the president, president-elect, secretary, and treasurer. Additionally, an executive committee oversees the organization.[7][8]
The association consists of 10 additional committees:[9]
- Nominating Committee
- Lawyers in Crisis Committee
- Grievance Committee
- Resolutions Committee
- Scholarship Committee
- Pro Bono Committee
- Admiral Harvey Weitz SBA Boat Ride Committee
- Courthouse Renovation Committee
- Hot Topics Committee
- Bench and Bar Committee
Formation
editWhile lawyers in Savannah always called themselves the "Savannah Bar," a number of lawyers formed the Savannah Bar Association in 1894. After combining with the Law Society of Savannah in 1917, the modern Bar Association was formed.[10]
