Scratchin' Melodii is an indepent rhythm game developed in Unity by developer and animator LJ LephemStar.
The plot of the game centers around the main character, Melodii. Who now has to pay their[1] community service fine assinged by the government after being caught vandalising. To reach their goal, Melodii needs to face off against various opponents in "rival battles".
The game contains a variety of references to other franchises such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Dragon Ball and Puyo Puyo.
Gameplay
editRival battles
editThe gameplay takes heavy influence from PaRappa the Rapper. As the opponent raps, a bar at the top of the screen will appear, showing symbols that match up to the opponent's lyrics. The player must then make Melodii rap in response to the opponent by pressing the buttons with the correct timing to match the opponent's line. Unlike it's genre predecessor, the game gives the player an option to freestyle and hit a dfifferent combination of notes as long as the beat of the track stays intact.
Overworld
editAside from the main rival battles, the player can navigate in an open-world enviorment.
Development
editOn August 21 2021, the game was first shown off at the Sonic Amateur Games Expo (SAGE)[2]
On August 23 2021, the "SAGE 2021 DEMO" was released. Featuring the songs "Astral Advisory", "Cream Cheese Icing", and "Grease Poppin'".[3]
On September 30 2022, the "SAGE 2022 DEMO" was released. Featuring the songs from the first demo as well as "Nami.WAV" and "Stir & Mix".
On December 10 2023, the "SAGE CHRISTMAS DEMO" was released. This was the last demo to be released, with development instead shifting towards the complete game.
Reception
editThe first demo for the game got a fairly positive reception, with players praising the unique artstyle and music. However, the second demo was when the game started getting recongnition. With many more people enjoying the game, and becoming the most popular rhythm game on Itch.io.
