editDillon was first elected as a councillor to Barcaldine Regional Council at the 2016 Queensland local elections before successful contesting the mayoralty at the 2020 elections when he defeated his three opponents.[1][2]
Comments Dillon made at a local government meeting in February 2021 about his concerns local health officials would not be able to issue COVID-19 vaccinations to everyone in the local community in the allocated timeframe prompted an investigation by the Office of the Independent Assessor for alleged potential misconduct.[3] The OIA told Dillon that his remarks undermined public confidence in the vaccination program and that he "did not demonstrate high quality leadership" for making such comments publicly during a pandemic.[3] Dillon described the investigation "farcical".[3]
The complaint against Dillon was dismissed in February 2022 with the Independent Assessor determining that his comments were made in response to inaccurate information about the vaccine rollout which had been provided by a council staffer.[4] Dillon again criticised the investigation, describing it as an attempt to "trample over the rights of a duly elected official to speak up for their community."[4]
State government
editAfter announcing he would be stepping down as mayor of Barcaldine Regional Council in February 2024, Dillon successfully sought pre-selection to be the LNP candidate for Gregory to contest the 2024 Queensland state election, in a bid to succeed outgoing MP Lachlan Millar who announced his retirement from politics in October 2023.[5][6] In 2014, Dillon had unsuccessfully contested the pre-selection ballot in an attempt to succeed retiring MP Vaughan Johnson but lost to Millar.[7]
In October 2024, Dillon alleged he was physically assaulted by two men on the roadside near Alpha in late August after he stopped to offer assistance.[8] The Queensland Police Service confirmed they had received a complaint about an incident on 27 August 2024 and that investigations were continuing.[9] The alleged incident is condemned by both LNP leader David Crisafulli and Queensland premier Steven Miles with Miles declaring that he and Dillon were friends despite belonging to opposing political parties.[10]
