Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal is a 2018 remake of the original Senran Kagura Burst which was released for the Nintendo 3DS, the second game in the main series. Like the original game, it contains the story of the first game in the series, Senran Kagura: Skirting Shadows, along with an additional story featuring a new take of the original in the perspective of the evil shinobi. It was released for the PlayStation 4 in Japan in 2018[1] and North America and Europe on Playstation 4 and Microsoft Windows in 2019[2]. It also contains two new stories in the form of DLC[3] showcasing two characters, Yumi and Miyabi, and the events leading up to the third game in the series, Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus.

The game features a lot more changes from the original. The most obvious change is the difference in dimensions. The original game was designed as a 2.5D side-scroller action game, Re:Newal is a full 3D action game with updated graphics and gameplay features mostly taken from Senran Kagura Estival Versus[4]. Although, in an effort to perserve the original games charm, unlike the Versus series, you cannot enter Frantic Mode[a] after starting a mission. You can only enter Frantic Mode before starting the mission, just like the original release. Completing a mission in Frantic mode adds a purple star to your ranking at the end.

The base game contains 10 playable characters, 5 from each shinobi class, when you start and 2 additional ones that can be unlocked by completing the final mission in each two main stories. With DLC this can be increased to 13 additional characters with a total of 25 playable characters after completing the game.

Release

edit

On October 12, 2018, Xseed Games announced that the western release of Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal would be delayed in order to remove the Intimacy Mode from the PlayStation 4 version. The Windows release would not be altered when it was released on Steam as they would want to "respect the wishes of the platform holder[5]" for the PlayStation 4.

Notes

edit
  1. ^ A mode where damage dealt and damage taken is greatly increased
