Her interest in acting began in third grade when a theater troupe performing at her school asked for volunteers to tell the next story, and she was picked.[3] Shawna then went on to study the Meisner method of acting in Austin, Texas by coach Larel Vu Vuvet who studied directly under Sanford Meisner.[4]

Early Career

[edit]

Before posting on social media, Shawna was involved in acting projects including Nesting (2016), Seraphina Is Fine (2017) and My Naked Villainy (2011)[5]. When Shawna's first child was born, she began posting skits as a creative outlet on social media.[3]

Shawna the Mom

[edit]

Shawna switched to posting on TikTok in late 2020, which began as one-off commentary on motherhood, pregnancy, and family dynamics. It wasn't until January 2021 that Shawna Lander gained traction by posting a skit about giving birth that got 1.5 million views in less than 24 hours. From here, Shawna began posting these skits more regularly, which included a recognizable repeated costume of a brown wig and peach and white shirt that would later become known as the recurring character 'Barb' which represented the mother in law of the portrayed 'Shawna' in her skits. These costumes, and in particularly 'Barb' has become synonymous with the Shawna The Mom skits.[6][7]

Since 2021, Shawna has expanded her social media presence to include Youtube, Instagram, and Facebook, with her Youtube channel featuring long format versions of the skits, combining all of the short videos into one long 'episode'.
