The Italian Society of Mineralogy and Petrology, acronym SIMP. was established in Pavia and legally recognized with the royal decree n. 1901 on December 12th 1940,[1][2] with the name of Società mineralogica italiana (Italian Mineralogical Society). The name was then changed to the current Società Italiana di Mineralogia e Petrologia (SIMP) in 1970.[3]

Memberships
editMemberships are open upon application to people and institutions working in mineralogical sciences s.l. which includes the fields of Crystallography, Mineralogy, Petrology, Geochemistry and Volcanology.
The society currently counts 553 registered member (May 2020) from Italy and some international countries.[4]
Publishing activities
editSince the year of its foundation until 1988 the society published the "Reports of the Italian Society of Mineralogy and Petrology".
In 1989 the cooperation with other European societies (the "Deutsche Mineralogische Gesellschaft" and the "Société Française de Minéralogie et de Cristallographie") gave rise to the scientific journal European Journal of Mineralogy (EJM) that became the official international journal of the three societies later (2004) joined by the "Sociedad Española de Mineralogía".
The SIMP also edits and publishes an annual national supplement “Plinius”, which contains among other the extended summaries of the PhD theses of Italian PhD students carrying out their research in the disciplines competence of the Società Italiana di Mineralogia e Petrologia.
