Song Min-Young (송민영), born February 27, 1998, is a South Korean youtuber and former trainee under JYP Entertainment. She is best known for competing in the survival show Sixteen, in which she placed seventh, but did not form part of the line-up of girl group Twice.
6Mix
editMinyoung joined JYP Entertainment at age 11 through an audition in the US. In December 2013, JYPE announced its plans to debut a new girl group. The group was known in pre-production as 6Mix, and would have six members. The initial line-up was planned to be Song Minyoung, Im Nayeon, Yoo Jeongyeon, Park Jihyo (then known as Jisoo), Cecilia Boey and Lena Ahn. Cecilia left the agency for unknown reasons, and was thus replaced by Minatozaki Sana. However, Lena also left the agency, and the group's debut was ultimately cancelled by late 2014 after the Sewol Ferry Tragedy.
Sixteen
editThe survival show Sixteen premiered on 13 April 2015. The show featured sixteen contestants, whose goal was to be one of the seven members of girl group Twice. The contestants were divided between 'Major' and 'Minor' groups. Minyoung began the show in the 'Major group. In episode 2 She sang a self-composed song titled "You Don't Have to Say". She switched places with Sana and was moved to 'Minor'. In the show, she stated that she believed her lack of confidence to be the reason for this. In episode 5, she performed alongside Sana, Tzuyu and Dahyun. The group performed "Problem" by Ariana Grande and all four members were ultimately moved to 'Major'. In episode 7, she performed alongside Sana, Jihyo and Chaeyoung. The group performed "Nobody" by Wonder Girls, and the four stayed in 'Major'. In episode 10, Minyoung switched places with Dahyun, and therefore was not a part of the final line-up.
In an interview after the show,[1] Minyoung stated "I will work hard to be a genuine artist. I think I will sing all my life...I appreciate my fans who cheer me up and miss me even after the program. I didn't have the chance to show 100% about me. I wanted to say thank you to my fans who loved me regardless of that.
YouTube
editMinyoung remained publicly inactive until January 2021, when she created the YouTube channel 'myssong 마이쏭'. Her first post, on 2 February 2021, was a dance cover from when she was a trainee. On the 16th, she posted a video talking about her experiences on 'Sixteen'. She stated "After the program, I went through such a hard time. Now I can smile and talk about it. There were so many chances for me to debut since I was in middle school, but those kept failing and failing and that repeated until my senior year. Back then, I was already worn out by so many failures to debut. and it was a time when I couldn't get myself together. But the company said they were progressing the survival program. I forced myself to participate because I had no choice, so in the program I always looked depressed. All of the bad parts of me were shown in the program. Even now, when I look at myself through the program, it makes me feel sad." She expressed her gratitude towards her fans for waiting for her. She stated that she no longer wanted to sing, and stopped doing music for years. She spent this time studying and working many different jobs.[2]
The channel features vlogs, self-composed songs and covers. On 19 October 2021, Minyoung released her first song as a solo artist under the name 'myssong'. The song titled "Midnight" is a collaboration with Lewis Park and Dollarsignpark, and an accompanying music video was released on the channel.
In an Instagram post on 18 April 2022, Minyoung wrote "I'm currently working on a music video for the song that's soon to be released around summer time", but, after no song was released, she uploaded a video on 8 September 2023 in which she detailed issues surrounding the filming of the music video.
