Studio 54: American Crime Story is the fourth season of the FX true crime anthology television series American Crime Story. The season will portray the rise and fall of Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager and their Studio 54 nightclub during the 1970s leading up to Rubell and Schrager's eventual tax fraud conviction.

editA fourth season of American Crime Story was put into development on January 18, 2017. The potential season was set to be based on Jeffrey Toobin's 2000 non-fiction novel A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President.[4] The following month, in an interview with E! News, executive producer Ryan Murphy confirmed that the season was moving ahead with Sarah Paulson attached to star.[5] It was later announced by Murphy on April 4, 2018 that the project would not be moving forward, but was later redeveloped as the third season of the series Impeachment after Katrina, the third season initially planned, was also announced not to be moving forward.[6][7][8] As a result, multiple other potential instalments of the series were being developed at FX.[7][9]
On June 16, 2021, during an episode of Deadline Hollywood's Crew Call Podcast, Murphy revealed that a season based on the Studio 54 scandal was being developed as a potential season.[10]
You can tell in my work that I'm obsessed with that era. That's when I was a child, in Indiana, getting the Liz Smith column in the Indianapolis Star, reading about it, I'm like 'Oh! I wanna go there.' I love what it's about. I love that time and place. But I also feel like, it's a story of excess, and a story of two guys who had a dream, and took the dream too far and paid for it. I love Ian Schrager's work and I think he's a genius. It's an interesting story to tell through the prism of American Crime Story.[10]

During FX Networks' Summer 2021 TCA Press Tour panel on August 13, 2021, it was confirmed that Studio 54 was officially being developed as the fourth season of American Crime Story.[11]
