Sultan Bello Hall Literary and Debating Society

edit

The Sultan Bello Hall Literary and Debating Society is the Literary and Debating Club of the Sultan Bello Hall of Residence within the University of Ibadan.[1] Headed by the General; it is run by a quasi-militaristic administration with the head of the club, the General, being chosen by top members of the society. It is one of 10 clubs which represent the University's Halls of Residence as well as the associated University College Hospital's dedicated residence for medical students. Alexander Brown Hall. The club's modern history is often dated by its members to go back to its revision by then General Amobichukwu Amanambu[2] who instituted the guiding Standard Operating Procedures for its members.

The Society's is recognized for its participation in two main events, the Self-Hosted Armory of Words and the University-wide Jaw War, often touted as the largest public speaking competition within Sub-Saharan Africa.

Structure

edit

The Society maintains 5 executive officials led by the General.

The positions of the General, Deputy General and the Reviser are bestowed by the top members of the society known as Field Marshals. Field Marshals are typically final-year students of the University who have displayed meritorious service in the course of their membership within the society.

Directly below the Field Marshals are the Marshals. This is the largest group which constitutes all inducted and active members of the society. While they may be assigned various representation duties they are still considered expendable.

On the lowest level are "Rookies". These include newly admitted recruits and inactive members who have been demoted.

All Marshals and above are divided into 2 active squads, namely the Dynamites and the Bullets. Persons who have not been assigned into a squad are often branded as belonging to the "Rocket" squad a play on the rookie brand. Each Squad is led by a Squad Captain whose authority extends outside the usual hierarchy especially during the in-house Armoury of Words. The Squad Captain for the Dynamites traditionally receives the position of the General Secretary while the Captain of the Bullet Squad is usually appointed as the Financial Secretary of the Society.

Membership

edit

Recruits are drawn only from the members of the Hall but the society is reputed to occasionally grant training to foreign applicants deemed worthy. Upon the completion of a member's course of study they become Alumni of the Society. Former members such as Victor "Black Dragon" Johnson, Festus Okunola, Damilola Akinsanya and former General Moses Olanrewaju may hold advisory capacities as alumni within the society.

Controversies

edit

Despite the acclaimed superiority of its individual members, the Society has only claimed victory in the campus-wide Jaw War[3] competitions once. It attracted much criticism due to pulling out of the 2021 Competition after its win over the Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall was denied due to a computing error.[4]
