Surf Point is an artist residency located along the coast of York, Maine. Operating since 2019.[1], artists and art professionals are selected to apply through a peer-led nomination process. The program hosts 3-4 artist and art professionals at a time for three-week live-work residencies. The mission of Surf Point is to provide “time, space and support for members of the visual arts community to think, connect and create.” [2] Since its inception, Surf Point has hosted over 120 artists and art professionals.

History

edit

Surf Point is the former residence of art patron Mary-Leigh Call Smart [3] and painter, photographer, printmaker and educator Beverly Hallam[4]. In 1970 Smart bought 46 acres on the ocean in York, Me with Hallam. With architects Carter + Woodruff, they designed a modern duplex home called “Surf Point”, living there from 1971 until their deaths.

Smart and Hallam built a second building on their property, affectionately referred to as the "Wild Knoll". The writer May Sarton rented this house from 1973 until her passing in 1995[5]

In the 1980s, Smart and Hallam began to envision what would become of the property after their death, arriving at the residency model that exists today.
