Swamp Radio is an independent internet radio station dedicated to promoting country rap, a genre that fuses elements of country music and rap. It was founded by radio industry veteran, Mauricio Martinez, who previously ran a pirate FM station and Alien Signal Radio, which featured electronic dance music. After discovering country rap, the founder decided to create Swamp Radio as a platform for independent artists in the genre who needed greater exposure.
Swamp Radio's content focuses on country rap, blending cultural influences from both urban and rural communities. Martinez believes that country rap unites listeners from diverse backgrounds, regardless of race or location. The station plays a wide range of artists, from mainstream stars to underground talent.
Notable mainstream artists include Ryan Upchurch, The Lacs, Adam Calhoun, Bottleneck, and FJ Outlaw, as well as classic country icons like Hank Williams. Independent and underground artists featured on the station include Lyrikul, NoneRealA, Country Cody, 386 Music, Chad Armes, Jamwayne, DJ Sound Surge, Crisgo and much more.
The name "Swamp Radio" reflects Martinez's connection to Miami, Florida, which was once largely swampland, symbolizing a unique cultural identity for the station. This identity represents not just the South, but a blend of country and urban music traditions. Despite challenges, such as funding and running the station largely independently,
Swamp Radio has made a significant impact by bringing country rap to a global audience, including listeners in Europe and Africa. The founder’s vision is for Swamp Radio to become the authoritative voice of country rap, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
The station works closely with independent artists and is open to sponsorships to further its reach and support for the genre’s growing community. With plans to expand, Swamp Radio aims to be a household name synonymous with country rap.
