The TUM Georg Nemetschek Institute Artificial Intelligence for the Built World (TUM GNI), founded by the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Nemetschek Innovation Foundation in 2020, is a research and teaching institute focusing on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in interrelated fields of architecture, civil engineering, construction, operation, and asset management (AECOM).[1][2] The Institute is located under the umbrella of TUM and the Munich Data Science Institute (MDSI), which is a core element of the TUM AGENDA 2030.[3]

In November 2020, the Institute announced its first call for research proposals, leading to the formation and initiation of six interdisciplinary projects.[4]

In April 2021, the GNI hosted its kick-off symposium to offer an overview of the current state of research and to discuss the potentials, visions, and expected influence of AI on the AECOM sector.[5]

In March 2022, Prof. Ian Smith became the Founding Director of the Institute.[6]

In September 2024, the GNI hosted its second symposium in Garching.[7]

Non-Profit Funding

edit

The Nemetschek Innovation Foundation supports TUM GNI with an initial funding of 20 million euros over ten years and additionally provides approximately 30 million euros for interdisciplinary projects.[8] The Foundation benefactor, Prof. Georg Nemetschek, studied civil engineering at TUM and later founded Nemetschek SE, which is now a leading provider of construction-related software.

Location

edit

The TUM Georg Nemetschek Institute is located on the TUM Campus Garching in the GALILEO building.[9]
