The Taiwan Film Festival in Australia was founded by Benson Wu in 2018. Drawing from his experience organizing the Sydney Film Festival and the Mardi Gras Film Festival, Benson planned the Taiwan Film Festival in Australia. Currently, the Taiwan Film Festival in Australia screens in six cities: Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Hobart, Adelaide, and Melbourne.[1][2]. Hobart was added as a new city starting from the sixth edition in 2023, and Adelaide was added as a new city starting from the seventh edition in 2024.
In the seventh edition in 2024, Benson Wu introduced the First Nations Selection that includes four Indigenous films for the first time, providing an opportunity for Taiwanese Indigenous people to showcase their culture in Australia.
The Festival in Hobart is screened at State Cinema, North Hobart. Benson We stated the reason to choose Hobart because of its great brew beverages in the Mandarin program show on 14 July 2024 at Edge Radio 99.3FM [3].
Due to the tension between China and Taiwan[4], many pro-China and China-funded media outlets refuse to cover Taiwanese cultural and artistic events, including the Taiwan Film Festival.
