Tania Gabrielle Levey (she/they) is a Professor of Sociology at York College, City University of New York, specializing in gender, sexuality, sex work, stigma, and social media. She holds a BA from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, where she double majored in Philosophy and Women’s Studies. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology and a Certificate in Women Studies from the CUNY Graduate Center. She has been a faculty member at York College since 2006.
Levey’s recent publications include include "Dominating Pleasure: High Job Satisfaction Among Professional Dominatrixes" in Sex Work Now, edited by Bernadette Barton, Barb Brents, and Angela Jones (2024, NYU Press), "#MeToo in Social Media" in Institutional Sexual Abuse in the #MeToo Era, edited by Jason D. Spraitz & Kendra Bowen (2021, Southern Illinois University Press), and Sexual Harassment Online: Shaming and Silencing Women in the Digital Age (2018, Lynne Rienner Publishers). Articles on dominatrix work can be found in the journals Deviant Behavior and Sexualities.
Levey currently lives in New York City with her two cats, Banshee and Lemmy, and DJs under the name Tania Insomnia.
Levey and her identical twin sister Marissa Levey were born in the Bronx, New York City. Her mother, Sandra Levey, is a musician and Professor Emeritus of Speech and Hearing Sciences from Lehman College. Her father, David Levey, is a retired Economist and former lecturer at Harvard, Yale, the New School, and Wayne State University. She has an older brother, Daniel Levey.
