The Tarlac United Force was a planned Filipino professional basketball team based in the province of Tarlac. The team was set to compete in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) beginning in the 2024 season alongside the Pangasinan Heatwaves and Abra Weavers, but was pulled out by the league due to financial concerns.

History

edit

Founding

edit

The Tarlac-based team was first announced by the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League on March 5, 2024. They were the third expansion team announced for the league's 2024 season after the Pangasinan Heatwaves and Abra Weavers.[1] Nicanor Reyes IV was set to be the team owner and head coach with John Flores as the assistant coach. The team also planned on using Tarlac State University as its primary venue.[2]

Withdrawal

edit

On April 16, 2024, the league announced that the team wasn't able to fulfill its financial obligations, forcing the league to pull them out of the competition.[3] From the time of announcement to the time of folding, the Tarlac franchise only lasted 42 days. Should the franchise have continued, their first game would have been against the hosting Caloocan Batang Kankaloo at Caloocan Sports Complex on April 18.[4]

The league did go on to say that they "look forward to the possibility of having a team from [Tarlac] that can provide fans with a source of pride an unity in the near future."[3][5]
