The Tax Free World Association (TFWA) is a trade organisation that represents brands active in duty free and travel retail, a global market with estimated sales of $73 billion in 2023.[1]

Purpose

TFWA's stated purpose is to help brands identify trends and opportunities, build awareness and enable the global duty free and travel retail industry to prosper. The association organises exhibitions and conferences, and commissions market research.

History

TFWA was formed in 1984 by two industry executives[2].In 1985 it organised its first trade event, the Tax Free World Exhibition in Nice. The first Asia Pacific-based event was held in Singapore in 1995. 2017 marked 70 years since the opening of the world's first airport duty free shop3 at Shannon Airport in Ireland.

Structure

Founded under the French law of 1901 governing non-profit associations, TFWA is led by a President working with a board and management committee both drawn from member companies. A team of permanent staff manages the association's day-to-day activities.

  • TFWA World Exhibition & Conference (held at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes) – Described as "one of the most important events in the duty free and travel retail calendar",[4] it is often seen by the business press as an indicator of traveller and industry trends.[5][6][7][8][9] French TV news channel BFM also covered the 2024 edition[10]
