About the Dickey Center

edit

The John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding, commonly known as the Dickey Center, is an interdisciplinary department at Dartmouth College located in Hanover, New Hampshire. The Dickey Center was created with the mission to foster global dialogue and encourage student engagement in international affairs. The Center plays a central role in empowering the Dartmouth community to contribute towards developing solutions for global challenges.

The Dickey Center is composed of three main pillars of interest. The first pillar is Arctic Studies, which examines the impact of climate change on one of the Earth’s most delicate ecosystems. Secondly is Global Health, which focuses on topics of health and worldwide access to healthcare. The last pillar is International Peace and Security, which focuses on policy making and global peace efforts.[1]

Arctic Studies

Since 1989, The Institute for Arctic Studies (IAS) has carried on Dartmouth’s longstanding history of studies of the global north. As climate change continues to alter northern ecosystems, the future of the environment, cultural heritage and politics of northern regions are forever altered. The Arctic Studies Program hosts seminars with both indigenous and non-indigenous experts on these regions, and encourages student engagement through research opportunities, courses and events. A specific focus is taken by the Program on the North American arctic, supported by the McCulloch Program on Canadian-American relations. The US-Canada Program supports students through grants for scholarships, travel funding, and other opportunities related to the program. The Program also sponsors internships, fellowships and an Arctic Innovation Scholars Program.[2]

Global Health and Development

The Global Health and Development (GHAD) Initiative takes a broad look at the different issues surrounding healthcare around the world. Through research, courses, and service, the program particularly focuses on health equity and poverty alleviation for the global population. The Global Health and Development Initiative supports students by their sponsorship of the Global Health Fellowship program, as well as a Global health internship, and more recently, the Pandemic Security Project.[3]

International Peace and Security

The Initiative for Global Security strives to enhance knowledge sharing among the Dartmouth community relating to the topic of peace and how it can be achieved globally. Additionally, the initiative makes it their goal to provide their students with the resources needed to enter careers related to international affairs. Through research and collaborations with foreign policy-makers, the initiative for Global Security works to improve policy-making on the world-scale. This initiative leads the War & Peace Fellowship and a post-doctoral fellowship, as well as sponsoring an internship, to support students at Dartmouth who are interested in international affairs, both before and after graduation. Additionally, the initiative also funds undergraduate internships.[4]

History

The Dickey Center was established in 1982 in honor of John Sloan Dickey, who served as Dartmouth’s twelfth president from 1945-1970. During his years at Dartmouth, Dickey was a dedicated advocate of the liberal arts and strove to make Dartmouth College the best liberal arts school in the nation. Dickey became known for his commitment to promoting international awareness and engagement among the students at Dartmouth. These interests and initiatives laid the groundwork for what would later become the Dickey Center. In the early days of the Dickey Center, the program focused solely on expanding the International Studies discipline at Dartmouth, yet in the 40 years since, the Dickey Center has grown to encompass a variety of topics which represent some of the most pressing global issues of today.[5]

Academic Opportunities[6]

The Dickey Center provides a variety of academic and hands-on learning opportunities to Dartmouth Students, including:

  • Research and internships – The Dickey Center funds on average, 75 international inters and research fellows in 35 different countries annually.
  • Great Issues Scholars Program – Every year between 80 to 90 first year students take part in this program, where they learn about a variety of the world’s most pressing issues.
  • War & Peace Fellowship – Through this fellowship 60 to 70 students, excluding first years, learn about complex global issues through meetings with high-level policy makers, and experts on the subject of war and peace.
  • Global Health Fellowship Program – Every year undergraduate, graduate, and medical students are invited to join the Program as they explore a wide range of health and healthcare related issues. Students participate in service projects, visit with health scholars and participate in simulations for global health policy.
  • The Rosenwald Postdoctoral Fellows in U.S. Foreign Policy and International Security – The Dickey Center welcomes 6 to 8 postdoctoral fellows each year to participate in research related to a Dickey Center area of research, including: environment, health, human development, gender, and security.
  • International Studies Minor – The Dickey Center is also the overseer for the International Studies minor at Dartmouth, as well as any courses related to their pillars, (global health, environmental change, and security).

Events[7]

The Dickey Center hosts between 20 to 30 public speaker events each year. These events often feature high profile guests who are invited to speak on pressing global issues relating to the Dickey Center’s areas of interest. Through these events, the Dickey Center encourages knowledge sharing and global dialogue among students at Dartmouth and the broader community as well.
