Tipunk (Lionel Dominique Chelliah) Born on 24 May 1990 is a Mauritian drummer/percussionist known for his creative mind who has worked as a session musician in many music genres. His musical philosophy is a profound appreciation for the traditional rhythms that pulse through the Indian Ocean. His journey explores sound, where the complexity of ternary rhythms meets the raw energy of rock genres, to jazzy influences.
Bio
editTipunk was seduced by drums at his early age,his parents offering him drum toys every Christmas. He played naturally, with little instruction. Years later he attended ''The Conservatoire de François Mitterrand where he studied modern drums. Ti Punk was taught not only the technical prowess needed to master the instrument but also the language of music itself. Learning to read music opened up a new world of possibilities, allowing for a deeper understanding of the complex rhythms.
At the age of sixteen famous Mauritian Drummer ''Jalill Auckbaraullee offered him an album of Vinnie Colaiuta[1], an event that changed his life and led him to join Atelier MoZar to learn jazz music.
Career
editTipunk studied architecture at the University of Anglia Ruskin[2]in Chelmsford Essex,UK ,where he also played with numerous British acts.
A Key life changer is when he played with International artist Menwar [3] and went on tour. Menwar initiated him to the ravanne[4] and his new technique for mastering the instrument in multiple musical contexts. It was a rite of passage, an initiation into the world of the of traditional music approach and his unique genre Sega, Saggai.
