Toronto Masque Theatre was an interdisciplinary music theatre company located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 2003[1] by violinist, conductor and educator Larry Beckwith. The company mounted 15 seasons of masques, masque-inspired programs and new works in the spirit of the masque in venues all across Toronto, including the Jane Mallett Theatre at the St. Lawrence Centre, the Glenn Gould Studio, the Betty Oliphant Theatre, MacMillan Theatre at the University of Toronto, the historic Enoch Turner Schoolhouse, Crow's Theatre, Tarragon Theatre, the Winchester Street Theatre and others.
In 2005, Beckwith was joined by actor Derek Boyes[2] and dancer/choreographer Marie-Nathalie Lacoursière [3] as Artistic Associates. Vivian Moens served as Managing Director from 2010-2018.
With the support of the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts, Toronto Masque Theatre commissioned new works from composers James Rolfe [4], Abigail Richardson [5], Omar Daniel [6], Dean Burry [7], Alice Ping Yee Ho [8], Juliet Palmer [9] and Andrew Downing and poet/librettists Andre Alexis, Marjorie Chan and Anna Chatterton [10].
Toronto Masque Theatre collaborated with other arts organizations in Toronto, including the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra [11], the Exultate Chamber Singers and the Soulpepper Theatre Company . They were presented at numerous summer festivals across Ontario, including the Westben Festival, the Elora Festival, the Festival of the Sound and the Music and Beyond Festival in Ottawa.
The organization benefitted from funding from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto Arts Council.
Their final program - The Last Chaconne - took place at Jane Mallett Theatre in Toronto on May 12, 2018 [12].
