Tragic Waste (2024) is a Gibraltarian horror fiction film directed and written by Nigel Canepa. It was produced by Creep House Entertainment, an independent production studio founded by the visionary minds of Nigel Canepa and Orlando Charvetto dedicated to pushing the boundaries of horror cinema..[1]

Starring 'Saw' actor Costas Mandylor, the film promises to deliver gut-wrenching gore, jump scares, and rollercoaster storyline that will test your loyalties.

Tragic Waste (2024) is more than just a horror film, it's a story about the consequences of action.[2]

Plot

edit

In a tragic turn of events, a young girl becomes an unintended victim of a heinous act committed by a group of rogue law enforcement agents. As her death remains shrouded in darkness, a relentless force seeks justice for her untimely demise. Haunted by guilt and fear, the rogue cops realize they are being pursued by an unknown force, feeling the weight of their collective responsibility for the girl's death. As the pursuit intensifies, the line between reality and nightmare blurs, plunging them into a world where justice takes a deadly and supernatural form[3].

Production

edit

In September 2023, filmmakers Nigel Canepa and Orlando Charvetto met to explore the possibility of creating their own film. The following month, Nigel Canepa began drafting the screenplay for what would eventually become Tragic Waste, initially working under the title Sinners. Determined to involve his long-time friend Costas Mandylor, Nigel Canepa reached out to him in November 2023. Costas Mandylor reviewed the script and quickly committed to the project[4]

During a live Instagram broadcast, Nigel Canepa disclosed that the script had gone through six drafts, noting that the initial version was considerably darker and included more intense depictions of violence.[5]

As the screenplay evolved, Nigel Canepa sought the expertise of Irish cinematographer Jim Crone, inviting him to take on the role of director of photography. Jim Crone joined the team in November 2023, marking the beginning of Tragic Waste's pre-production phase. By February 2024, the project was ready to begin filming.

Filming

edit

The initial filming of Tragic Waste took place over four weeks in February 2024, primarily in Gibraltar, chosen for its gritty urban landscapes.[6] The upper town, for example provides a dark and gritty backdrop, whilst's Gibraltar's nature reserve (a protected nature reserve in the British Overseas Terrority of Gibraltar) is a rich and exotic environment.[7] Additional scenes, including SWAT sequences, were filmed in San Roque, Spain.

Upon reviewing the initial cut, Nigel Canepa and Orlando Charvetto identified areas for improvement, opting to replace several scenes to enhance pacing and address gaps in the storyline. In May 2024, the cast and crew returned to production for an additional two weeks to film these revisions.

By mid-May 2024, filming was fully completed, and Tragic Waste moved into post-production.

Music

edit

As a prolific musician, Nigel Canepa chose to feature some of his own music in Tragic Waste. The soundtrack includes tracks from his former band, The Views, with select remixes by DJ Ian Russo. The film’s main theme, "The Demon’s Theme," along with several other pieces, was composed by Nigel Canepa's longtime partner, Sianne Ward.

Additionally, Gibraltarian hard-rock band Dead City Radio contributed music to the film, including a track that plays over the end credits. Rounding out the soundtrack, American composer Tim Kulig provided several of his compositions, adding depth to the film's musical landscape.

edit

Prior to its theatrical release, Tragic Waste (2024) was spotlighted on GBC's popular weekly magazine show, The Hub. In an engaging live segment, actor Peter Mckay and writer Nigel Canepa joined the hosts to share an inside look at the film's creative journey. They discussed the unique props and immersive filming locations, each chosen to enhance the gritty tone and realism of the story. They also delved into the inspirations behind the film's narrative, providing viewers with insights into the thematic depth and artisitic vision that shaped Tragic Waste. The episode offered fans a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into the film's development, setting the stage for its highly anticipated release[8].
