Trinity Zion Armstrong (born July 25, 2007) is an American college soccer player who plays as a center back for the North Carolina Tar Heels. She received first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) honors as a freshman in 2024. She won bronze with the United States at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup.
Early life and college career
editArmstrong was raised in Frisco, Texas, with two older brothers. Her mother, Karla Nunn, played college soccer for Kentucky. Armstrong attended Hebron High School for a year before enrolling in IMG Academy in Florida, where she was named team captain and most valuable player as a sophomore. She graduated one year early to begin college at age 17.[2][3] She trained with National Women's Soccer League club Racing Louisville FC as a non-roster invitee before starting college.[4]
North Carolina Tar Heels
editArmstrong starred for the North Carolina Tar Heels as a freshman in 2024, being named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) first team and the ACC all-freshman team. She helped North Carolina open the season with a 12–1 record before missing time while at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup as the team went 3–3. She returned to face No. 1–ranked rivals Duke in the semifinals of the ACC tournament, in which she critically saved a shot off the goal line and then headed in her first college goal in a 2–1 comeback victory.[3]
International career
editArmstrong was called into camp with the United States national under-15 team in 2022.[5] She won the Montaigu Tournament with the under-16 team the following year.[6] She started four of five games as the under-17 team won the 2024 CONCACAF Women's U-17 Championship.[4] She then played every minute of the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, helping keep three clean sheets in six matches as the United States finished in third place, its best result since 2008.[2]
