Tropical Storm Meranti is a tropical storm from which formed on September 6 and dissipated on September 10, 2010.
Meteorological history
editOn September 6, Meranti formed around the Aleutian Islands, with dense fog observed.[1] The storm was then spotted south of Jeju Island, with flaring convection over a disorganized low-level circulation center, but also with a favorable environment. The potential for development was later classified as poor.[2] A few hours later, the storm had a well-defined low-level circulation center with deep convection and curved convective banding, with the potential being upgraded as fair.[3]
The next day, the storm had 55 knot winds, exceeding the winds yesterday.[4] The storm had a better low-level circulation center with tighter formative banding. The storm also had good equatorward outflow.[5] The next day, the storm had improved collective banding with the system having consolidation.[6]
On September 9, the storm became a tropical storm, with winds up to 35 knots and with pressure up to 998HPA.[7]
Preparations and impact
editChina
editIn preparation for the storm, all beaches in the affected areas were closed, with the Xiamen-Jinmen shipping line being canceled.[8] When the storm hit China, 1 million people were affected, with 145,300 of them being evacuated. With heavy rainfall and winds, three people were killed after the storm destroyed their houses, with economic losses in Fujian amounting to 800.3 million yuan ($117.7 million).[9][10] 300 flights were also cancelled following the storm.[11]
Philippines
editShortly before the storm dissipated, the storm posed a threat to Batanes, eventually bringing heavy rains and floods.[12]
