Typhoon Cecil, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Bebeng, was an intense typhoon which impacted the Philippines during April 1979. The second tropical depression, storm, and typhoon of the 1979 Pacific typhoon season, Cecil developed over the open Pacific.

Preparations and impact

In Tacloban, eight died.^[1] A survey vessel offshore Western Visayas sank, with only four of the nine marine biologists aboard being picked up by other boats.^[2] Following the typhoon, President Ferdinand Marcos issued a "state of calamity" for Romblon and Leyte.^[3]

In total, Cecil caused 30 casualties in the Philippines and $36.191 million in damages.^[4]^[5]
