The Union of Student Organizations of Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein (German: Union der Schülerorganisationen der Schweiz und des Fürstentums Liechtenstein, Italian: Unione comitati studenteschi CH/FL), abbreviated USO or USO-UCE-UCS, is the national umbrella organization of around 80 student organizations and student councils of secondary schools in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein.
USO is a member of the Organising Bureau of European School Student Unions, the Swiss Youth Organizations Working Group, the Education Coalition NGO, and the European Democratic Education Community.
Goals
editUSO pursues the following goals:
Representing the interests of students and their associations to politics, administration, media, and the public; Promoting student participation in teaching, school, and education policy; Supporting member organizations with services and promoting the creation of new student associations; Facilitating fruitful exchange between students from all over Switzerland; Establishing and maintaining contacts at the international level.
In short: by representing and supporting students and their organizations nationwide and maintaining relationships within and outside Switzerland, USO contributes to a better learning experience for all.
Positions
editUSO's fundamental positions are laid out in its charter. It advocates for strong student participation in all educational matters, non-discriminatory and free access to education, and moderate harmonization of the education systems in Switzerland.
Currently, USO is particularly focused on Curriculum 21, exam-free university admission, and student rights.
Organization
editGeneral Assembly
editThe General Assembly is the supreme body of USO. It decides on the values and norms of the organization, elects the board, approves the annual accounts and budget, and serves as a platform for exchange for member organizations.
Board
editThe board represents the association externally, implements the decisions of the General Assembly, organizes events for members, and selects the USO delegation in its umbrella organizations. The board consists of seven equal members, elected for one year. Only students of a secondary II school or those who have left such a school no more than three years ago can be board members.
The USO board organizes its work into departments. In total, the board is composed of 7 people occupying 12 departments.
