USI, Universal Scientific Industrial (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., is an electronic design and manufacturing company established in 1976 in Nantou, Taiwan. It ranked 12th in the global electronic manufacturing services industry in 2023[2]. Together with its subsidiary companies, Asteelflash and Hirschmann Car Communication[3], USI operates across four continents—Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Africa—through 30 production and service locations.
Services
editUSI specializes in providing a diversified range of electronic products and services under the D(MS)² acronym. This stands for:
- Design
- Manufacturing
- Miniaturization
- Industrial software and hardware Solutions
- Material procurement, logistics, and maintenance Services
USI caters to various sectors in the global market, including wireless communications, cloud computing and storage, consumer electronics, industrial, medical, and automotive electronics.
History
editFounded in 1976 in Nantou, Taiwan, USI initially entered the market with thick-film microelectronics technology in automotive electronic modules and controller fields[4], mainly producing automotive voltage regulators and resistors. In 1999, the company became one of the members of ASE Holdings.[5]
In the last few decades, USI expanded its production facilities on six continents (Mexico, Scotland, Japan, China, and the United States). During this period, USI's manufacturing sphere was further extended to Point-of-Sale (POS) systems, video products, servers, and hand-held devices.
In 2012, USI was listed on the A-share main board of the Shanghai Stock Exchange.[6] The company purchased a Polish subsidiary from Chung Hong Electronics in 2018 and set up a plant in Poland.[7] In the end of 2020, the company acquired Asteelflash, the second-largest EMS company in Europe[8], and in the same year, USI decided to invest in a new plant in Haiphong, Vietnam[9].
In 2022, USI has exceeded USD 10 billion[10]. In October 2023, the company completed the acquisition of Hirschmann Car Electronics, which is TE Connectivity's automotive wireless business[11], gradually realizing the business layout from modules to system solutions in the field of automotive electronics.
So far, USI has 30 service and production sites worldwide. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Poland plant expansion will be held in June 2023, and the plant is expected to start mass production in the first quarter of 2024[12]

Investing in education
editUSI has sponsored several educational rural revitalization programs, such as the Rural Digital Education Program[13] and Hope for Pearls Project[14] to help children in impoverished regions obtain resources for quality education and narrow the gap between urban and rural areas, helping students with excellent grades but cannot afford tuition to actualize their dream of finishing high school.
Conserving the Environment
editUSI has collaborated with Shanghai Roots and Shoots's "Million Tree Project" since 2013[15], which aims to combat desertification, protect ecosystems, and promote the restoration of local biodiversity by planting over 160,000 trees, conserving water and capturing CO2.
