The Vancouver Island Soccer League (VISL) is a men's soccer league operating primarily on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.

History

edit

The league is an amateur league, and does not compete against or promote teams to the Canadian Soccer Pyramid. VISL Division 1 (along with the Vancouver Metro Soccer League, and the Fraser Valley Soccer League) provides the highest level of amateur play in British Columbia.[2]

Historically, the league has produced several British Columbia Soccer Association Provincial Cup Champions and has featured a number of former professional players.[3]. When qualifying for the 1986 FIFA World Cup, the Canadian men's national soccer team used a large VISL player contingent, including Victoria-based George Pakos, who scored the deciding-goal versus Honduras at King George V Park in St John's, Newfoundland to secure qualification to the nation's first world cup. [1] The league is also home to the oldest continuously-run soccer club in Canada, Vic West FC, who were founded in 1896.[4]
