Vinay Maloo is the founder and chairman of Enso Group[1]. He is also known for co-founding HFCL and leading the telecom revolution in India.[2][3]
Early life & Education
editVinay was born in a Hindu-Jain family[4], in the state of Rajasthan in India. He moved to Kolkata at an early age and did his schooling from National High School followed by graduation from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata with honours.[5]
Career
editVinay started HFCL in 1987 with two other co-founders at the age of 23 after leaving a modest career in Kolkata where he dealt in scrap. He subsequently bought a marble mine in Rajasthan near Udaipur, called Kankroli before starting the telecom company, which was the first private sector telecom company in India. It paved the way for a broader telecom vision and play in a country that boasts of high teledensity and a robust telecom industry.[2][5]
In 2005, Vinay left HFCL and started Enso Group which entered into energy, petroleum products, mining, trading, IT, real estate, healthcare and other diversified sectors.[6]
HFCL during his tenure peaked in valuation, which was in excess of USD 3.5 billion.[7] He resigned in 2005 after planning his foray into a diversified and global empire which has high value energy and potash mining assets, in Russia and Canada. Before that, they started Ensearch Petroleum which had 14 oil and gas licenses.[8][7]
Enso’s healthcare arm was in the spotlight for spearheading Sputnik V and Sputnik Light vaccine manufacturing in India during COVID-19, aka, Coronavirus outbreak.[9][10] Enso Oils & Lubricants is the Indian partner for Gazprom Neft engine oils.[11][12] Enso Global Trading is a trading house based out of Dubai.[13]
Personal life
editHis father is a chartered accountant who worked with RPG Group and his mother is a homemaker. He is married to Vineeta who he met through family connections. She is an economics graduate from Sophia College which is affiliated with University of Mumbai. They have two children - Vaibhav and Garima.[14][15]
