Viney P. Aneja is a Professor in the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences at North Carolina State University (NCSU), USA. He served as the Co-Director of Graduate Programs from 2016 to 2020. Dr. Aneja is recognized for his significant contributions to environmental science, particularly in the fields of air quality, atmospheric chemistry, and climate research. He was recently recognized in the Stanford University 2020 list of the world’s top 2% scientists.[1] He was appointed to the NC Secretaries’ Science Advisory Board and serves on the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Board of Scientific Counselors (BOSC) Executive Committee since 2014.[2]
Early Life and Education
editViney Aneja completed his Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, India, in 1971.[3] He pursued his Master of Science (M.S.) and later earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, USA.[2] Additionally, he holds an MBA with a major in Planning and Control from Union College, Schenectady, New York.[3]
Academic Career
editDr. Aneja joined the faculty of NCSU's Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences in 1987. He is also a Professor of Environmental Technology in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at NCSU, a position he has held since 2001.[3]
Before his academic career, Dr. Aneja conducted and supervised research in environmental science and engineering at General Electric Company in New York and Northrop Services in Research Triangle Park, NC. He also held visiting professor positions at the University of Uppsala and the Arrhenius Laboratory in Sweden, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India.[4]
Research Contributions
editDr. Aneja has developed one of the nation’s leading agricultural air-quality and climate research programs at NCSU.[5] His research focuses on natural and anthropogenic emissions of nitric oxide, ammonia, and sulfur compounds, and their roles in ozone formation and gas-to-particle conversion.[4] His work on atmospheric photochemical oxidants in the North Carolina mountains has clarified the impact of long-range pollutant transport on acid rain formation and damage to high-elevation trees.[3]
In recent years, Dr. Aneja has concentrated on the contribution of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) to air quality, particularly the emissions, transformation, transport, and fate of pollutants in the environment and their effects on climate.[2]

editDr. Aneja has served on various high-profile committees, including the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Board of Scientific Counselors (BOSC) Executive Committee since 2014.[3] He chaired the BOSC Subcommittee for Air, Climate, and Energy (ACE) research program from 2015 to 2017.[3] Additionally, he has been a member of the U.S. Agricultural Air Quality Task Force, the NC Secretaries’ Science Advisory Board, and several EPA Science Advisory Board committees.[3]
