Walter J. Chazin is the Chancellor’s Chair in Medicine, Professor in the departments of Biochemistry and Chemistry at Vanderbilt University. [1][2][3] He is also affiliated with the Vanderbilt Institute of Chemical Biology [4] and the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. [5] Chazin is the founding director of Vanderbilt Center for Structural Biology, retiring from that position in 2021.[6] [7]
Early life and education
[edit]Chazin earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from McGill University in 1975. [6] In 1983, he received his Ph.D. in Physical Organic Chemistry from Concordia University in Montréal under the guidance of Laurence D. Colebrook.[6][7]
His postdoctoral training was with Kurt Wüthrich at ETH in Switzerland and a second postdoctoral with Peter E. Wright at The Scripps Research Institute.[7]
Career
[edit]Walter Chazin was born and raised in upstate New York.[8] In 1987, began a faculty position at Scripps Research Institute in the Molecular Biology Department.[9][7] In 1999, he began a faculty position at Vanderbilt University at the School of Medicine and College of Arts and Sciences. [9] [7] [10]
Chazin currently serves as the Chancellor’s Chair in Medicine, is the Senior Associate Dean in Biomedical Research Education and Training (Appointed in 2024), and is the Director of the Molecular Biophysics Training Program. [1] [2] [10] [7]
Research
[edit]Chazin’s research includes DNA damage, DNA repair, DNA replication, fragment-based molecular discovery, inflammation, innate immune response, and structural biology (BCHM). A basis of his research is understanding the structure and movements of proteins and the manner in which they interact with other proteins, DNA, and medicines. [2] One of his research programs involves studying the DNA priming at the replication fork. [9]
In Chazin’s lab, they study systems involved in bacterial pathogenesis and cancel at a molecular level, focusing on specific techniques to address the key questions in medicine and biology. [1][9] [10][2]
Honors and awards
[edit]Chazin honors include American Cancer Society Junior Faculty Research Award in 1990-93 and the American Cancer Society Faculty Research Award in 1994-98 [11] and Regents Visiting Professor, University of Naples, Italy in 1998. [11] He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the Biophysical Society.[10] The 2016 Fellow of the Biophysical Society award. [8] [9] And others including the Stanley Cohen Award and the Armstrong Mentoring Award. [6]
