Yi Ui(이의, ? - ?) was a public servant during the early Goryeo Dynasty. He is the fourth son of Yi Ja-yeon, who was the Munhasijung (문하시중, similar to prime minister) and was king Munjong's brother-in-law. He is the great-grandson of the founder of his clan, Yi Heo-gyeom. His sister was Queen Inye, making him the maternal uncle to Goryeo kings Sunjong, Seonjong, and Sukjong. He is also the paternal uncle of Yi Ja-gyeom.
Biography
editYi Ui was born as the fourth son of powerful politician Yi Ja-yeon and Kim In-wi's daughter, Grand Lady of Gyerim State, of the Gyeongju Kim clan. Yi Ui's early life is unknown, until the point where he was directly appointed by the king to be the Gungijubu (군기주부) in the 1040s-50s.[1]
Inspector of Chunjudo
editIn 1068, Yi Ui was appointed as the Chunjudo Gamchalsa, or, Inspector of Chunju Province. During his tenure, he renovated the Chungpyeongsa(청평사), a run-down temple and renamed it to Bohyunwon(보현원).[2] Yi Ja-hyeon, his son, would later retire there to live out the rest of his life.[3] In 1080, he was appointed as the Byeongmabusa(병마부사) in the north, and left Chunjudo.
Invasion of the Jurchens
editIn late 1080, a Jurchen force invaded Goryeo territory, and Yi Ui, along with Moon Jeong, Choi Seok, and Yeom Han, left with 30,000 soldiers and scored a notable victory at Chongju. For his accomplishments, the king awarded him with a box containing 50 yang[4], and was promoted to Taejabingaek(태자빈객)[5]
Later Life
editIn his later years, he was named Jwasangisansi Jichumilwonsa(지추밀원사)[6] Later, he would be named the Jimunhasirang(지문하시랑평장사).[7] Yi Ui last appears in the Goryeosa in late 1082. It is assumed he died sometime after.
